My Name is Will, over the past decade or so I have owned both new-ish and old cars. I've paid thousands for cars like a Peugeot 306 and as little as £200 for a 17 year old Nissan Bluebird. I even managed to get myself a Peugeot 405 diesel for nothing. The cars I paid the most for were also the most boring, Nissan Primera was a good solid and quick car but had no character. Compare this to the (supposedly boring) Bluebird, which despite its age and generic looks, had bags of charater. This car never let me down, and I loved the retro 80's interior. The 405 had 275000 mile on the clock and never let me down. Only the build quality wasn't up to scratch as on most french vehicles. So please some-one justify spending thousands on a new car that will lose money hand over fist for the first few years, not to mention what you lose when you drive it off the forecourt. Unless you have money to burn then I really cannot understand what you would do this for! So you can choose the colour you like? So you can show off to the Jones family next door? Is it ego? What is wrong with you people! Why is any car over maybe just seven years old considered to be obsolete? Can anyone honestly tell me that the new vectra looks anywhere near as good as a Mk1 cavalier? Come on, whats going on there? Oh older cars are not reliable? Tell that to my sister who (against my advise) purchased a new Citroen recently and has various problems with the electrics and build quality. I took her 1997 Micra off her when she bought this new car, and do you think I have had any trouble - thats right, nothing of the sort. Apart from feeling a little ashamed to be driving a girls car!! Give a Citroen CX against a modern Xantia or C4 any day. The Bluebird was more spacious and exclusive than the Primera I owned - and it sounded better due to the carb engine. No it wasn't as fast or effecient, or even as safe. But Why spen a few grand on a new budget car, when for the same money you can have a nice older car. Also, why do people spend thousands on a car, and then choose a small engine? What you want a car the will do 45Mpg to save you money??? Er, ok, you could always get a small engined car with a higher spec and pay less by not wasting your money on something new! Hats off to Toyota for developing the Prius, but erm, well why marry the electric engine to a petrol. Problem with this is, you can get just as good economy from a decent diesel car to begin with. So you have just parted with your money to buy a car that isn't really that economical, carries a premium for the research and had less room than the average car in its class. nice one Einstien, by the way did you know that the compoments for alot of new cars are build in China - the most polluting country there is. - Sorry Mr Bush, you lost that one!!! So by buying an old car you are preventing the need to produce another new car - which contributes to pollution. Just because something is old, it doesn't mean you should throw it away. What if someone decided to knock down Windsor Castle to put up a block of flats/apartments. I'm not saying the cars I've metioned are classics, the Bluebird may never be. The 405 is a classic in the making, the CX is and the BX will be. But if we just send everything to the scrapyard, what will be left? Buy a new car if you want, it may be a classic too one day. But when you see a guy drving a 10 or 20 year old car, don't just assume that they cannot afford something better. It could well be someone with his or her own logic and driving preference. My blog is aimed mainly at UK drivers, where the car is a status symbol, I like new cars fine, the Volkswagen Passat is a lovely drive, the Mondeo is solid the Vectra, erm well better luck next time Vauxhall, I prefered my Mk3 Cavalier. I want peoples opinions on cars, the car that they wish they had never sold. The one that got away, what is your dream car, what is the worst car you ever drove, Just talk about you experiences and whatever takes your fancy. just keep it car and motoring related. Bikers welcome! But caravans, no thanks - I'm with Clarkson on that one!!!

Thanks for reading my rant, have fun!
